Those stones are still on the bridge and I myself lifted one in each hand on many occasions and one market day, I carried them across the bridge and back, some four to five yards - Donald Dinnie.

Jack Shanks - At Potarch - 8th May 1972 & 3rd June 1973

Height - 5'10.5" (1.78m)

Weight - 11 st. 7-lbs. (161-lbs) (73-kgs)

Age - 36 & 38

1972 - Jack performed 5 unassisted lifts, plus a trial lift on the Saturday before (6/5/72). Jack is the first man to lift the stones unassisted after Donald Dinnie himself in 1860.

Residence - Belfast, Northern Ireland

1973 - Jack carried the stones unassisted over the full distance of 17'1 1/2" on the top of a flatbed lorry for the benefit of the large group of spectators and press gathered. Both of Jack's visits were witnessed by David Webster OBE. This was the first time Dinnie's feat had been replicated showing the world that it could be done.

Over 42 years later at Aboyne Village Green on 3/10/15 Jack returned to watch his son Stevie lift the stones unassisted making them the first Father & Son lifters of the Stones since Donald Dinnie and his father Robert over 150 years earlier

Jack has attended all of the Gathering events in 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2021 along with his son Stevie.
